Here are the facts about carbs and why specific carbs are healthy and needed in a balanced diet.


What are carbs? Carbohydrates are one of the three macronutrients, along with protein and fat. They are a primary source of energy for our bodies and are essential for normal bodily functions. There are two types of carbohydrates: simple and complex.


Simple carbs: Simple carbs are made up of one or two sugar molecules and are found in foods like fruit, honey, and candy.

Complex carbs: Complex carbs are made up of multiple sugar molecules and are found in foods like whole grains, vegetables, and legumes.

Why are carbs important? Carbs are essential for providing our bodies with the energy needed to carry out daily functions. In fact, our brains rely on glucose, a type of carbohydrate, to function properly. Additionally, carbs provide important vitamins, minerals, and fiber that are necessary for overall health.


Which carbs are healthy? Not all carbs are created equal. Simple carbs, like those found in candy and sugary drinks, are digested quickly and can cause a rapid spike in blood sugar levels. This can lead to a crash in energy and can be harmful to overall health. On the other hand, complex carbs, like those found in whole grains, vegetables, and legumes, are digested more slowly and provide a sustained source of energy. These carbs are also rich in fiber, which helps to regulate blood sugar levels and keeps us feeling full and satisfied.

Healthy carb sources include:

  • Whole grains like quinoa, brown rice, and whole wheat bread

  • Vegetables like sweet potatoes, squash, and leafy greens

  • Legumes like lentils, chickpeas, and black beans

Why do some people avoid carbs? Some people choose to avoid carbs for various reasons, including weight loss and digestive issues. While reducing carb intake can lead to short-term weight loss, it is not a sustainable or healthy long-term solution. Additionally, eliminating carbs completely can lead to deficiencies in important vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
